One of the lawmakers supporting the Ghanaian Family Values Bill, 2021, and the champion of proper human sexual rights, Rockson-Nelson Defeamekpor, has reacted to threats made by prominent transgender person Angel Maxine to expose homosexual politicians.
On December 11, Angel Maxine announced that he had spoken with a few gay politicians and was aware of material that implicated them. He would release the names to the public in the event that Ghana’s “Anti-gay Bill” is passed.
“Are you [Angel Maxine] a woman?” In a mocking manner, Mr. Defeamekpor inquired on Dwaso Nsem, the morning program on Adom FM, monitored by InsightNewsgh.com
He stated that they are committed to passing the LGBTQ Bill as Members of Parliament in order to preserve Ghana’s cultural legacy.
“We take it in our strides that it’s part of the hazards of the job, and so we will continue to do what is in the interest of Ghanaians,” Defeamekpor stated.
He claimed that threats were common, citing past incidents during the passage of the E-levy.
He made it clear that the Bill will serve as a deterrent in addition to its main objective of ensuring reforms. As a sovereign people, we feel that this kind of behavior needs to be checked.
“Nobody is intending to imprison anybody with this Bill. It is a conduct that we think that we should check as a sovereign people.”
Mr Dafeamekpor said: “I support the lower limit. The legislation we are considering, which would lead to an enactment, involves certain aspects of conduct that we need to proscribe, and not all of them should necessarily lead to custodial sentences. Regarding the minimum, which became a point of contention on the floor, it means the court wouldn’t have the discretion to even caution someone and discharge them after they have been convicted. However, the intention of this legislation is not necessarily to imprison people”.
However, MPs were unable to reach a consensus in Parliament regarding the proper penalty for LGBTQ+ individuals who have unnatural carnal knowledge with one another.
The Bill proposes making same-sex relationships and relationships between people and animals or objects illegal, with a maximum sentence of three to five years in prison.
