In the event that he wins the presidency in the general elections of 2024, former president John Dramani Mahama is urged to pledge to Ghanaians that he will revoke the lithium lease agreement signed by the Akufo-Addo administration.
Ransford Gyampo, a professor at the University of Ghana, called the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer and stated that the agreement was detrimental to Ghana.
Prof. Gyampo called John Mahama because he did not think Parliament would carefully review the lithium deal if it was eventually brought to the House for ratification. Prof. Gyampo had concerns about the amount of money Ghana will receive from the deal.
According to Prof. Gyampo, interested parties can easily buy Members of Parliament (MPs) to force through the agreement, which has been deemed unfavorable.
“We don’t trust Parliament. People are hungry and so they will succeed in buying everybody. The history of this Parliament is a Parliament that barks but does not act. I do not trust Parliament,” Prof. Gyampo stated on Saturday, December 9, on TV3’s Key Points.
“Mr Mahama, promise to repudiate this agreement,” he urged.
Prior to the start of lithium mining at Ewoyaa in the Mfantseman Municipality of the Central Region, the Minority in Parliament has demanded that the government present the House with the 15-year mining lease with Barari DV Ghana Limited.
John Jinapor, the ranking member of the Mines and Energy Committee, stated that an agreement of this kind ought to be submitted to Parliament for approval in accordance with Article 268 of the 1992 Constitution.
Samuel Abu Jinapor, maintained that Ghana benefited most from the contentious lithium transaction.
According to him, the lithium agreement between the Ghanaian government and Barari DV Ghana Limited will have a major positive impact on the nation.
Mr. Abu Jinapor revealed that the contract’s execution will give Ghana 10% in royalties during a press briefing on Ghana’s First Lithium Contract, Terms, Benefits, and the Way Forward at the Ministry of Information.
