As anticipation mounts over the announcement of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s running mate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akomea, the head of communications for Dr. Bawumia’s campaign team, has revealed that the flagbearer has yet to discuss the shortlist of potential running mates with party members.
During an appearance on the Good Morning Ghana show on Metro TV on December 8, Akomea shared insights into the ongoing process and addressed concerns about the delay in the Bawumia’s running mate announcement. Despite widespread speculation, Akomea expressed confidence that Dr. Bawumia would reveal his choice sometime between May and July.
Contrary to expectations, Akomea clarified that discussions regarding a shortlist for the running mate have not taken place within the party. He acknowledged the existence of various names circulating as potential frontrunners, emphasizing the need to avoid a contentious selection process akin to the recent flagbearer contest.

“We have never discussed (a shortlist), but I know there are many names as some are known as front runners and some known as possibles,” Akomea stated. He expressed hope that the delay in naming the running mate would not intensify competition among potential candidates, considering the current speculation and discourse surrounding the issue.
Addressing concerns about individuals, particularly Members of Parliament, who have been identified as frontrunners without publicly denying the claims, Akomea voiced worry about the potential predicament faced by these individuals during the party’s scheduled primaries in January.

“My major worry is that many of these people who have been tagged as frontliners and they haven’t come to deny, so I assume that they agree with their frontliner,” Akomea expressed. He emphasized the logistical challenges that may arise if a candidate is chosen after winning in the parliamentary primaries, necessitating another primary within a short timeframe.
As the NPP navigates this crucial decision, party members and the public remain on the edge of their seats, awaiting the revelation of Dr. Bawumia’s choice for a running mate in the coming months.
