Navigating the Intersection of Technology and Finance: Bawumia’s Clarification on Ghana Card ‘s Role in Credit Access.

Vice President Dr Bawumia has issued a clarification regarding statements attributed to him during the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) awards ceremony. Contrary to circulating interpretations, he emphasized that he never asserted that the Ghana Card could be used directly to purchase a car.

The initial comments that sparked discussions were made by Dr. Bawumia at the GIPC Awards event, where he underscored the government’s commitment to harnessing technology for efficient services. He highlighted the multifaceted utility of the Ghana Card, suggesting its integration into various aspects of daily life, including facilitating transactions.

Addressing the ensuing discussions and potential misconceptions, Vice President Bawumia clarified the context of his statements. He explained, “I was making a statement that one of the things we don’t have currently in Ghana is a credit scoring system that the referencing agency will normally do. That statement I made, of course, was taken out of context, and some people even disagreed with that statement, saying we don’t have such an individualized credit system in Ghana.”

He continued, “The Ghana card being the anchor, some people misunderstood that, saying you can use the Ghana card to buy a car, which doesn’t make sense. The Ghana card will help you get credit to be able to assist you in making purchases of goods and other services.”

The Vice President highlighted the government’s efforts to introduce an individualized credit scoring system in collaboration with the central bank, aiming to differentiate risks for individuals. This system, slated for introduction next year, is intended to make credit more accessible to companies and consumers alike.

This clarification of the Ghana-Card-Car-Purchase seeks to prevent any misinterpretation of the Vice President’s statements and provide a clear understanding of the intended message.

Beyond the specific clarification concerning the Ghana Card, the incident underscores the government’s ongoing commitment to advancing technological initiatives that enhance service delivery, contribute to the ease of doing business, and create a digitally inclusive environment for citizens.

As discussions surrounding technological advancements and their implications continue, responsible communication remains crucial, especially when addressing matters that impact public perception and confidence. The clarification ensures that citizens have accurate information about the government’s initiatives and their potential impact on various aspects of daily life.
