According to the National Communications Authority (NCA), Starlink’s operations and sales are prohibited in Ghana.

Starlink is a satellite-based internet service provider that offers competitively priced service in more urbanized areas and connectivity to underserved areas.

The Authority claims that none of Starlink’s equipment has received type approval or a license in Ghana.

The Authority emphasized that their operation in Ghana without a license or authorization from the NCA is thus directly against Section 3(1) of the Electronic Communications Act 2008, Act 775.

“Except as otherwise provided under this Act a person shall not operate a public electronic communications service or network or provide voice telephony service without a license granted by the Authority,” the NCA quoted.

As a result, the NCA has advised the public not to use any equipment or services that are allegedly from Starlink.

“Persons engaging in the sale or operations of the service are also directed to cease and desist immediately,” it stated.

It gave the public assurance that, in order to protect its licensees and customers, it will keep up its efforts to ensure fair competition and participation in the market.

Over 60 countries are covered by the US aerospace company SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet constellation. Post-2023, it also plans to provide worldwide mobile phone service.
