To discuss a possible running mate for their flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Council (NC) will meet today, December 6, 2023.
The vice president of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, advanced to face former president and NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama in the general election of 2024 after winning the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primary.
Finding people the party believes can work well with Dr. Bawumia in order to help the party win the 2024 election is the main goal of the meeting’s agenda.
Reliable sources suggest that prominent individuals like Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and the Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, are serious contenders for the position.
It is expected that the NEC will hold in-depth discussions regarding these possible candidates before formally recommending one to the National Council for approval.
This procedure is in accordance with the NPP’s constitution, which stipulates that in situations where the President is not the chosen candidate, a running mate must be chosen 12 months prior to a major election.
Relatedly, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is optimistic that newly elected NPP presidential candidate and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will lead the ruling party to victory in the upcoming 2024 general elections.
Speaking to the NPP on Saturday, December 2, 2023, following the party’s parliamentary primaries in orphan constituencies around the nation, President Nana Akufo-Addo predicted the party would win the general elections in 2024.
According to him, the NPP party under the leadership of a deserved elected new flagbearer, Dr. Bawumia and with a formidable unity they will break the 8 in 2024 polls.
“Through this, we shall create the united, formidable front that, under the leadership of our new, worthy presidential candidate, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, will enable us to go into the difficult 2024 elections with quiet confidence, and, with the help of Almighty God, Break the Eight, which is the fervent wish of all NPP members, and, indeed, of all well-meaning Ghanaians.”
