    Alistair Darling began his career as a lawyer in Edinburgh. Darling entered politics in 1983 when he was elected to Lothian Regional Council. Alistair served in a number of shadow ministerial roles in the Labour Party, also including Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury and Shadow Secretary of State for Social Security.

    After Labour won the 1997 general election, Darling was appointed Chief Secretary to the Treasury. In 2007, Darling was also appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer by Prime Minister Gordon Brown. He also took office just as the financial crisis was beginning to unfold. Darling also responded to the crisis by nationalizing several banks and introducing a number of measures to stimulate the economy. He also introduced a number of tax increases, including a 50p top rate of income tax.
