The UK High Commissioner to Ghana, Harriet Thompson, has expressed concern about the “massive uncontrolled corruption” that the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) bemoaned a few days ago, stating that the canker is seriously impeding Ghana’s progress.

If not for corruption, which the GCBC claimed appears to have been legalized and is suffocating the nation, she claimed Ghana would have made great strides.

According to Citinewsroom.com, Thompson made these and other statements during a media interview at King Charles III’s 75th birthday celebration at her home.

“Corruption is one of the things holding Ghana back. It’s not only a problem in Ghana, but also a problem in many other countries. If all the money that comes into Ghana were used for the purpose for which it was intended, Ghana would be making faster progress,” the news website quotes the UK High Commissioner as saying.

According to her, Ghana’s high level of corruption raises the country’s corruption index and casts the country in a negative light, which is why it needs to be addressed.

Aside from corruption, Thompson also discussed the general elections in 2024 and promised the UK’s support for a free, fair, transparent, and peaceful process.

“We have been working with the Electoral Commission for a long time. We’re also doing some work to help tackle mis/disinformation, which sadly has popped up in many elections these days,” she disclosed.

The UK High Commissioner expressed confidence that Ghana would conduct another peaceful democratic process with the assistance of political and civil society players.
