The arrest of disabled toll booth collectors who were demanding their unpaid salary arrears at the Ministry of Roads has infuriated the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
On Wednesday, November 15, the incident started when disabled toll booth collectors tried to get a meeting with the Minister.
The NDC’s Director of Communications, Kakra Essamuah, expressed shock and disbelief by saying, “Reports that the disabled persons could be arrested and detained are a dark blot on the already terribly blackened human rights record of the Akufo-Addo government.”
The Ministry received a visit from the disabled toll booth collectors in order to discuss the problem of unpaid salary arrears, which was made worse by the toll booth closure.
The NDC said the arrest was arbitrary, which has sparked questions about how the nation treats its most vulnerable citizens.

“As our people say, if you have no money for your in-laws, you do not go further to insult them, thus adding insult to injury,” remarked Essamuah.
The NDC claims that the Minister of Roads ordered the arrest because they were afraid of meeting with people with disabilities. The party promises to keep a careful eye on things and to demand that those who were arrested receive justice.
“We will, in accordance with our mandate to hold the government accountable, be watching closely and be demanding justice for those whose only crime for their arrest and detention is an opportunity to engage with the Minister for the resolution of their problems,” asserted Essamuah.
