According to financial analyst Joe Jackson, Ghanaians cannot be forced to adopt the 24-hour economy that National Democratic Congress (NDC) leader and 2024 flagbearer John Mahama has promised to implement.
One of the main tenets of Mahama’s 2024 presidential campaign platform, according to him, is the 24-hour economy. He contends that implementing such a policy would support job creation and economic growth.
He promised to provide Ghana’s youth with the education and training necessary for a sustainable future.
According to him, the NDC government plans to implement a 24-hour economy in 2025, offering tax breaks and incentives to manufacturers who extend their hours in order to boost employment.
He claims that an NDC administration will seek to lessen the tax burden that the NPP administration placed on Ghanaian companies and investors, depriving Ghana of its envied status as one of Africa’s top investment destinations.
In response to Mahama‘s pledge, Joe Jackson stated that Ghanaians could not be forced to adopt a 24-hour economy.
He implored the government to offer incentives and foster a welcoming atmosphere by making a 24-hour economy alluring to business owners.
Joe Jackson stated in an interview with Citi FM in Accra that the most crucial point is that a 24-hour economy cannot be imposed.
“You can only provide incentives for the 24-hour economy and trust that entrepreneurs would risk their capital and businesses to join in. If there is somebody ready, and if there are enough people ready to eat fufu at midnight, I assure you somebody will be pounding fufu at midnight. If there is enough market for me to share my locally produced chips, then I assure you I will produce chips.”
Meanwhile, the arrest of disabled toll booth collectors who were demanding their unpaid salary arrears at the Ministry of Roads has infuriated the NDC.
