Biography
Xi Jinping is a Chinese politician who has served as the General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CCP) and President of China since 2012. He is also the Chairman of the Central Military Commission. Xi is considered the most powerful Chinese leader since Mao Zedong.
Xi was born in Beijing in 1953 to Xi Zhongxun, a prominent CCP official, and Qi Xin, a teacher. He grew up during the tumultuous Cultural Revolution. And was sent to work in the countryside as a teenager. After the Cultural Revolution ended. Xi returned to Beijing and also studied chemistry at Tsinghua University. He joined the CCP in 1974. And began working his way up the party ladder.
In the 1980s and 1990s, Xi held various positions in provincial governments. Most notably in Fujian and Zhejiang provinces. He also gained a reputation as a pragmatic and reform-minded leader. In 2002, he was appointed mayor of Shanghai, China’s largest city. He held this position until 2007. When he was appointed Vice President of China.
In 2012, Xi was elected General Secretary of the CCP. Thus making him the country’s top leader. He has also since consolidated his power, cracking down on corruption. And dissent and increasing China’s military power and also influence on the global stage.
