Caryn Elaine Johnson, known professionally as Whoopi Goldberg, was born on November 13, 1955, in New York City, New York. She is the youngest of three children born to Robert James Johnson, a Baptist minister, and Emma Johnson, a nurse. Goldberg’s parents divorced when she was young, and she was raised by her mother and grandmother.

Goldberg attended Washington Irving High School in Manhattan, but she dropped out before graduating. She began her career as a stand-up comedian in the early 1980s. In 1985, she released her first comedy album, Whoopi Goldberg, which won also her a Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album.
