The NDC’s “Rescue Ghana Mission” campaign slogan was rejected by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who asserted that the nation had already been saved when the New Patriotic Party (NPP) assumed power in 2017.

He reminded the people that in 2015, economic mismanagement forced the NDC government to request a bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

“This economy had to be rescued by the IMF,” Bawumia said. “They had to go for a rescue, that was the real rescue mission, as a price of mismanagement of this economy.”

He went on to say that the NDC government’s mishandling of the IMF program was another factor in its failure.

Meanwhile, Dr. Bawumia also praised the advancements Ghanaians have experienced under the leadership of the NPP.

According to him, Ghanaians are doing better than they did during the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.

As contributing factors, he mentioned the Nation Builders’ Corps, the Free SHS program, Planting for Food and Jobs, the reinstatement of nurses’ trainee allowances, and the creation of over 2 million jobs.

The Vice President also compared the record of the NPP to that of the previous NDC government, pointing out that prior to the NPP’s election, Ghanaians faced genuine hardships due to the public sector employment freeze, graduate unemployment, lack of postings for qualified teachers and nurses, dumsor, and a lack of support for the private sector.

“When you talk about suffering, for sure we have reduced suffering,” he said, adding, “You cannot say you have eliminated suffering, but compared to what we inherited from the NDC, we have reduced a lot of suffering.”

He emphasized that the NPP government is “doing a lot of targeted things” to help Ghanaians, and that the Free SHS program alone is saving parents 2.2 billion Ghana cedis.
