Alexis Lafrenière was born on October 11, 2001, in Saint-Eustache, Quebec, Canada. He is a Canadian professional ice hockey player who currently plays as a left winger for the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was also selected first overall by the Rangers in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft.
Lafrenière began playing hockey at a young age and quickly emerged as one of the most talented players in his age group. He played minor hockey for the Saint-Eustache Vikings and also the Laval-Montréal Hockey Midget AAA. In 2017, Lafrenière was drafted by the Rimouski Océanic of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). He made his QMJHL debut in the 2017-18 season and quickly established himself as one of the best players in the league.
In his first season, Lafrenière scored 42 goals and added 45 assists in 61 games. He was named to the QMJHL Second Team All-Star team and was awarded the Michel Brière Memorial Trophy as the QMJHL’s Rookie of the Year.
Lafrenière continued to improve in his second season, scoring 68 goals and adding 77 assists in 61 games. He was also named to the QMJHL First Team All-Star team and was awarded the Jean Béliveau Trophy as the QMJHL’s Most Outstanding Player. He also led the Océanic to the QMJHL President’s Cup championship.
Lafrenière also entered the 2020 NHL Entry Draft as the consensus top prospect. He was also selected first overall by the New York Rangers. He made his NHL debut in the 2020-21 season and also scored his first NHL goal on January 26, 2021, against the New Jersey Devils.
