Kelly Oubre Jr. was born on December 9, 1995, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He grew up in the Magnolia public housing project and had to overcome a lot of adversity to get to where he is today.
Oubre’s father, Kelly Oubre Sr., was a former college basketball player at the University of New Orleans. Oubre Sr. instilled a love of basketball in his son at a young age. Oubre Sr. also taught his son the importance of hard work and dedication.
Oubre began playing basketball at a young age and quickly showed his talent. He played for a number of different teams in the New Orleans area, including the New Orleans Recreation Development Commission (NORC) and the Riverside Rebels.
Oubre attended Edward Hynes Elementary School (now known as Hynes Charter School) and played for three Milne Boys Home (now known as NORC) basketball teams during that time.
Oubre’s family moved to Richmond, Texas, after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Oubre attended George Bush High School in Fort Bend, Texas, before transferring to Findlay Prep in Henderson, Nevada, for his senior season.
Life
At Findlay Prep, Oubre played alongside some of the top high school basketball players in the country, including Stanley Johnson and Isaiah Whitehead. Oubre helped Findlay Prep win the ESPN National High School Invitational in 2014.
He committed to play for the Kansas Jayhawks in October 2013.
At Kansas, Oubre played alongside other future NBA players, including Perry Ellis, Wayne Selden Jr., and Frank Mason III. Oubre helped the Jayhawks reach the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament in his freshman season.
Oubre averaged 9.3 points and 4.3 rebounds per game in his freshman season. He was named to the Big 12 All-Freshman Team.
Oubre improved his play in his sophomore season. He averaged 12.9 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. He was named to the Big 12 All-Conference Second Team.
Oubre declared for the 2015 NBA draft after his sophomore season. He was selected by the Atlanta Hawks in the first round with the 15th overall pick. Oubre was immediately traded to the Washington Wizards on draft night.
Oubre has played for a number of different teams during his NBA career, including the Wizards, Charlotte Hornets, Phoenix Suns, and Golden State Warriors. He is currently a free agent.
Oubre is a talented and versatile basketball player. He is a good scorer, rebounder, and defender. Oubre is also a good passer and has good court vision.
Off the court, Oubre is a successful businessman and philanthropist. He has his own clothing line, Valley Boyz Apparel, and a production company, Valley Boyz Productions. Oubre is also the founder of the Valley Boyz Foundation, which supports underserved youth in Phoenix.
