Frank Borman’s Personal Life
Borman was fascinated by airplanes from a young age. He earned his pilot’s license at the age of 15. After graduating from high school in 1946, Borman attended the United States Military Academy at West Point. He also graduated from West Point in 1950 with a degree in aeronautical engineering.
After graduating from West Point, Borman served in the United States Air Force for five years. He flew fighter jets in the Korean War. After the war, Borman also became a test pilot. He also flew experimental aircraft for the Air Force and for the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), which later became NASA.
In 1962, Borman was selected to be an astronaut. He was part of the second group of astronauts to be selected by NASA. Borman’s first space mission was Gemini VII in 1965. On this mission, Borman and his crewmate, James Lovell, spent 14 days in orbit. This was a new record for the longest time spent in space.
In 1968, Borman commanded the Apollo 8 mission. This was also the first crewed mission to orbit the Moon. Borman and his crewmates, James Lovell and William Anders, became the first humans to see the far side of the Moon.
