    Bio: John Lewis: A Civil Rights Icon

    John Lewis was an American politician and civil rights leader who served in the United States House of Representatives from Georgia’s 5th congressional district from 1987 until his death in 2020. He was a founding member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and a key figure in the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s.

    Biography

    John Robert Lewis was born on February 21, 1940, near Troy, Alabama, the third of ten children of Willie Mae (née Carter) and Eddie Lewis. His parents were also sharecroppers in rural Pike County, Alabama. Which Troy was the county seat. By the time he was six, Lewis had seen only two white people in his life.

    Lewis’s early life was shaped by the Jim Crow laws that enforced racial segregation in the South. He attended a segregated school and was also often denied basic rights and opportunities because of his race. Despite the challenges he faced, Lewis was a determined and courageous young man. He was inspired by the nonviolent civil rights movement led by Martin Luther King Jr., and he also joined the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) in 1961.

    Life

    Lewis quickly became a leading figure in the SNCC. He participated in numerous protests and demonstrations, including the Freedom Rides and the March on Washington. In 1963, Lewis was one of the “Big Six” leaders who organized the March on Washington, where King delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech.

    Lewis was also a key figure in the Selma to Montgomery marches in 1965. On March 7, 1965, Lewis was one of the leaders of a group of protesters who were attacked by Alabama state troopers on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. Lewis was beaten unconscious, but he survived and continued to lead the fight for civil rights.

    Lewis’s courage and leadership helped to bring about the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which outlawed racial discrimination in voting. He also played a key role in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which outlawed discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.

    In 1986, Lewis was elected to the United States House of Representatives, where he represented Georgia’s 5th congressional district for over 30 years. He was a strong advocate for civil rights, voting rights, and social justice. He also worked to promote economic opportunity for all Americans.

    Lewis was also a beloved figure in American politics and society. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011, and he was the recipient of numerous other awards and honors. He died on July 17, 2020, at the age of 80.
