Comfort Yebaoh, a defender for Ampem Darkoa Ladies, has received a lot of praise for choosing to use Twi in a post-match interview at the ongoing 2023 CAF Women’s Champions League.
Comfort Yeboah was crucial to the Ghana Women’s Premier League champions’ 2-1 victory over ASFAR Club on Monday night.
After a sluggish start to the match, Ampem Darkoa Ladies suffered a setback when Najat Badri put the reigning champions ahead in the fourteenth minute.
But in the second half, the Techiman-based team won the match, with Yeboah contributing to both goals.
The youthful defender leveled the score with a powerful goal in the 57th minute, and four minutes later, her cross forced Nouhaila Benzina of ASFAR Club to put the ball in her own net.
Comfort Yeboah gave a fantastic performance and was named the woman of the match. She spoke Twi during her post-match interview.
The defense chose to converse with the interviewer in English while using her native dialect, which was translated by a translator.
“It wasn’t an easy game, very difficult, but we fought and we were able to win the game. The coach spoke to us and assured us we can do it, and it really helped us,” she said through her translator.
I absolutely love that CAF have made provision for these ladies to speak in their local African languages and then get interpretation. Small progress, but important progress. 👏🏿

Since then, Yeboah has received recognition for choosing to converse with the world in her native dialect rather than pressuring herself to speak English.
On Twitter, a large number of Ghanaians thought the player’s gesture was awesome and urged other Ghanaian football players who struggle with English to follow suit.
The following are a few touching remarks made on Comfort Yeboah’s Twi post-match interview:

We should encourage our sports people to speak native language they aren't comfortable with English. @GhanaNLP will offer translation and subtitles. https://t.co/Sy35InmMJY
