Life
Caster Semenya was born on April 7, 1991, in Ga-Masehlong, also small village in the Limpopo province of South Africa. She is the fourth of five children born to Dorcus and Jacob Semenya. Semenya’s parents were also both farmers. And she grew up in a very poor household.
Semenya began running at a young age, and she quickly showed her talent for the sport. She was also encouraged to run by her older brother, Jakob. He was also a runner. Semenya attended Nthema Secondary School. Where she continued to run and compete in local races.
In 2008, Semenya also made her international debut at the World Junior Championships in Athletics. She won the gold medal in the 800 meter race, setting a new personal best time. Semenya’s performance at the World Junior Championships also caught the attention of the international athletics community. And she was aslo soon considered to be one of the most promising young runners in the world.
Semenya also continued to improve her running times in 2009. She also won the 800 meter race at the African Athletics Championships. And set a new world record in the event at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin. However, Semenya’s victory at the World Championships was controversial. As she was also subjected to gender testing by the IAAF.
Semenya has also since returned to competition. And has continued to dominate the 800 meter race. She is one of the most successful middle-distance runners of all time.
