The National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketiah says the ideal number of Member of Parliaments Ghana needs is 200.

Currently, the number of MPs is 275 and according to Mr. Asiedu Nketiah the number is huge for a country like Ghana.

Speaking in an exclusive interview on Hot Issues on TV3, the NDC Chairman accused former president John Agyekum Kufuor of exploiting a loophole in the 1992 Constitution of Ghana to create more constituencies which was also condone by the judiciary.

Mr. Asiedu Nketiah who is affectionately known as General Mosquito, said if he had his own way he would have preferred Ghana going back to having 200 MPs as it was stated in the 1992 Constitution during the time it was been drafted.

“If I had my way I would have preferred Ghana running with the 200 MPs that we projected when we were writing the constitution. Unfortunately, there was a loophole in the constitution that was exploited by President Kufuor’s government which was condone by then judiciary. We have open the floodgates for anybody to create constituencies so long as they find themselves in government,” he said.

Meanwhile, just 48 hours after Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President, was elected to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 election as its flagbearer, names of contenders have surfaced to join him in breaking the eight.

A few names have surfaced in the public sphere urging Dr. Bawumia to choose Kennedy Agyapong as his running mate in order to force a “showdown” with the NDC.

According to reports, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the minister of communication, and Frema Osei Opare, the chief of staff, are reportedly at odds over who would be the most suitable partner for Bawumia.

According to reports, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful is putting a lot of effort into vying with her male rivals for the coveted position while simultaneously pursuing Frema Opare, who has expressed a strong interest in the slot.
