Craig Counsell was born on August 21, 1971, in Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin. He grew up in a baseball-loving family, as his father, John, worked for the Milwaukee Brewers as their director of community relations and speaker bureau. Craig began playing baseball at a young age and quickly showed his talent for the game.
Counsell attended Whitefish Bay High School, where he was a star baseball and basketball player. He was named the Wisconsin High School Player of the Year in baseball in 1989 and led his team to the state championship. Counsell was also a two-time All-State basketball player and was offered a scholarship to play at the University of Notre Dame.
Counsell chose to attend Notre Dame, where he played baseball for the Fighting Irish. He was a four-year starter and was named to the All-Big East team three times. Counsell was also a two-time Academic All-Big East selection.
Siblings
Craig Counsell has one younger brother, named Brady Counsell. Brady is a baseball coach and has worked for the Milwaukee Brewers and the University of Notre Dame.
