Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the vice president of the republic and the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, asserts that he is a grassroots candidate rather than an establishment one, as his opponents would have Ghanaians believe.
He noted the following today, Thursday, November 2, 2023, during his final event to conclude his campaign for the NPP’s flagbearership in the 2024 election: he spoke with a small group of media professionals at his official home in Cantonment.
During his press conference, Dr. Bawumia stated that he has become even more acquainted with the party’s members during the campaign. He firmly believes that having been involved in this campaign for more than 15 years, starting in 2008, he can declare with confidence that he has been working with the NPP grassroots for a significant amount of time.
The Vice President said in his statement that the results of the polls on Saturday, November 4, as declared by the Electoral Commission (EC), will demonstrate his connection to the grassroots.
“Many people don’t actually appreciate that I have been campaigning in constituencies, sleeping in constituencies for the last 15 years. I’m very well known. I’ve been dealing with the grassroots, solving their problems for over 15 years, even when we were in opposition.
“And so, there is a closeness that I have to the grassroots that many of my competitors don’t have. You get to a place and someone will bring you a picture you took in 2008 and tell you, this is us together, and all of that” the Vice President said.
“So, I have this affinity with the grassroots of the party. And basically, this is one of the reasons why I believe that I am more of a grassroots candidate than an establishment candidate” Dr Bawumia added.
“That [Bawumia’s grassroots connection] will come through, I believe, on Saturday. I think that is one thing we should look out for because over 98% of the delegates are the grassroots.
