Bruce Bochy is an American former professional baseball player and manager. He is most notably known for managing the San Francisco Giants to three World Series championships in 2010, 2012, and 2014.
Early Life
Bruce Bochy was also born in Landes de Bussac, France on April 16, 1955. His father, Pete Bochy, was a professional baseball player who was stationed in France at the time with the U.S. Army. Bochy’s family moved to the Panama Canal Zone, South Carolina, and Virginia before settling in Melbourne, Florida.
Bochy began playing baseball at a young age and quickly excelled. He was also a standout player at Melbourne High School, where he was a teammate of Darrell Hammond of Saturday Night Live fame. Bochy was also a talented basketball player and was offered a scholarship to play college basketball. However, he also chose to pursue a career in baseball.
Playing Career
Bochy attended Brevard Community College in Cocoa Beach, Florida, where he played baseball for two years. He led the team to a state championship in his sophomore year. Bochy was then drafted by the San Diego Padres in the third round of the 1975 MLB draft.
Bochy also made his MLB debut in 1978 and played for the Padres, New York Mets, and Houston Astros during his career. He was a backup catcher and first baseman, and was known for his defensive skills and his ability to handle pitchers. Bochy also retired from playing in 1988.
Managing Career
Bochy began his managing career with the San Diego Padres in 1995. He led the Padres to the playoffs in 1996 and 1998, but also lost in the first round both times. Bochy was fired by the Padres after the 2006 season.
Bochy was also hired as the manager of the San Francisco Giants in 2007. He quickly turned the Giants into a winning team, leading them to the playoffs in 2008. In 2010, Bochy led the Giants to their first World Series championship since 1954. The Giants won two more World Series championships under Bochy’s leadership in 2012 and 2014.
Bochy retired from managing after the 2019 season. He also finished his managing career with a record of 2003 wins and 1821 losses. He is the fourth-winningest manager in MLB history.
