The High Commission of Ghana in South Africa has confirmed an incident involving a robbery at the Church of Pentecost in Johannesburg during a church service, which resulted in the kidnapping of a Ghanaian deacon.
In a statement released on October 30, 2023, the High Commission of Ghana confirmed that the armed robbers kidnapped a deacon of the Church of Pentecost during the incident which took place on October 29, 2023.
“The attention of the High Commission of the Republic of Ghana has been drawn to an incident in which members of the congregation of the Johannesburg branch of the Ghanaian Church of Pentecost were robbed of their valuables at gunpoint and Deacon of the church kidnapped during church service on 29th October, 2023,” the Mission said.
The High Commission has stated that it is collaborating with the Church of Pentecost (CoP) and the South African Police Service to ensure the swift and safe release of the CoP deacon.
“The Mission is presently working with the Church in cooperation with South Africa Police Service (SAPS) to ensure the speedy and safe release and return of the victim to his family. Kindly note that the South Africa Police is fully focused on the matter and is working hard to ensure the safe return of our compatriot,” the Mission said.
Members of the Ghanaian community in South Africa were also counseled by the Ghanaian High Commission to take the required safety and well-being precautions.
Earlier, while attending a church service in South Africa, a group of armed robbers attacked a community of Ghanaians.
During the church service, gunmen broke into the auditorium and attacked the congregation, as seen in a widely shared video of the incident.
Chaos broke out as soon as the preacher started preaching, and it was seen that armed robbers were robbing the congregation at gunpoint.
The robbers targeted the preacher, who was thought to be the assembly’s leader, taking phones and other valuables from him in addition to robbing the other worshippers.
One of the bandits came up to the pulpit and forced the minister to show them where the money was kept.
