In 2023, Presbyterian Boys Senior High School (PRESEC), located in Legon, set a record by becoming the eighth winners of the National Science and Maths Quiz. PRESEC Legon achieved this feat by surprising Opoku Ware Senior High School and Achimota School, both located in Kumasi and Accra respectively, in the final round.
In the fifth and final round, they surprised everyone by surpassing both Achimota School and Opoku Ware Senior High School. They scored 40 points, while Achimota School and Opoku Ware SHS scored 28 and 23, respectively.
With 18 points at the end of the first round of the 2023 grand finale, the Presecan boys took the first step toward securing the title of most successful school in the NSMQ from the outset.
Opoku Ware School, the two-time champion, and Achimota School, the two-time champion, concluded the first round with nine and eleven points, respectively.
PRESEC Legon maintained his lead with 40 points through the fifth round.
In the exciting semifinal games, Opoku Ware School, PRESEC Legon, and Achimota School defeated some of their fiercest opponents to advance to the championship game.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), an annual competition that three schools that are not new to the game are competing for the championship trophy and bragging rights.
Achimota School didn’t close the deficit until the fourth round, when they eventually tied Presec at 25 points apiece. PRESEC Legon finished the round with 31 points, compared to Achimota’s 28 and Opoku Ware’s 20.
At the start of the competition, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Minister of Education, praised Primetime, the contest organizers, for launching the National Science & Maths Quiz (NSMQ) for seniors in high school (SHS).
He claimed that the program has piqued SHS students’ interest in the study of science and related fields.
Dr. Adutwum also expressed her admiration for each participant from the three schools, saying, “no matter what happens, contestants, you have done well for your schools.”
