Henry Franklin Winkler OBE is an American actor, comedian, author, producer, and director. After rising to fame as Arthur “Fonzie” Fonzarelli on the American television series Happy Days, Winkler has distinguished himself as a character actor for roles on stage and screen. Winkler’s accolades include three Emmy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, and two Critics’ Choice Awards.
Winkler was born on October 30, 1945, in New York City, New York, to Ilse Winkler and Harry Winkler. His father was a butcher and his mother was a homemaker. Winkler’s parents were both Jewish and they raised him in the Jewish faith.
Winkler attended DeWitt Clinton High School in New York City, where he was a member of the drama club. After graduating from high school in 1963, Winkler attended Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts. He graduated from Emerson College in 1967 with a degree in theater arts.
After graduating from college, Winkler moved to Los Angeles, California, to pursue a career in acting. He landed his first major acting role in 1974, when he was cast as Arthur “Fonzie” Fonzarelli on the sitcom Happy Days. Happy Days was a huge success and Winkler became a household name. He played Fonzie for 11 seasons, from 1974 to 1984.
Since Happy Days ended, Winkler has continued to act. He has appeared in numerous films and television shows, including Night Shift (1982), Waterboy (1998), Arrested Development (2003-2006), as well as Barry (2018-present). He has also directed a number of episodes of television shows, including Happy Days, MacGyver, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
In addition to his acting and directing career, Winkler is also a successful author and children’s book author. He has written a number of books, including Hank Zipzer: The World’s Greatest Underachiever (2003) and Alien Superstar (2018).
