Victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage have been reassured by the government and the Volta River Authority (VRA) that every effort will be made to promptly restore their means of subsistence.
The ongoing controlled spillage from the Akosombo Dam has had a significant negative impact on thousands of residents in some areas of the Volta, Eastern, and Greater Accra regions. Many people had their homes submerged and lost their livelihoods to the floods.
However, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the VRA, Ing. Edward Ekow Obeng-Kenzo, stated the Authority has been extremely concerned about the welfare of the victims during his remarks at the media briefing in Accra yesterday regarding the government’s ongoing efforts to restore normalcy in the flood-affected areas.
VRA has declared that it will be spending more than GH¢20 million on relief supplies, including medical equipment, for the 36,000 affected residents.
In order to help farmers and sustain the livelihoods of flood victims, the government is also moving a $40 million World Bank facility.
As a result, the government and VRA have assured the impacted individuals that their welfare will be given first priority during these trying times.
“I wish to assure you that, we are and will continue to do over and above what is required, to ensure that we preserve the precious lives of our impacted brothers and sisters, make life comfortable for them, and restore them to their lifestyles and livelihoods in the shortest possible time.
“We will be with the communities throughout these trying times and make sure that the comfort and relief they need, they receive them,” Ing. Kenzo further assured the affected residents.
According to Ing. Obeng-Kenzo, the VRA has taken the necessary actions to protect people’s lives and help them reestablish their normalcy in order to achieve this goal.
He declared that Mepe, one of the communities in the Volta Region that had been inundated by flood waters as a result of the spillage, now had power restored by VRA.
