Akosombo Dam Spillage: Ablakwa accuses VRA of ‘mass murder’; threatens to sue VRA

The Volta River Authority (VRA) will be sued for what Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the member of parliament for North Tongu, refers to as a “man-made” disaster.

Ablakwa disclosed ongoing legal discussions with attorneys and accused the VRA of carelessness bordering on “mass murder.”

Ablakwa acknowledged the flood’s miraculously low death toll and applauded the local youth for their efforts in aiding rescue efforts.

The Minority in Parliament has called for a thorough investigation into the incident and blamed the VRA for the catastrophe.

Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the minority leader, voiced dissatisfaction with the VRA’s relief efforts and demanded swift action to house the affected communities, suggesting temporary relocation to the Saglemi Housing project.

The spillage was caused by unexpectedly large inflows into the lake, according to Mr. Emmanuel Antwi-Darkwa, CEO of the VRA.

In order to protect the dam and ensure public safety, he emphasized that the spillage was a necessary emergency measure. The situation was being closely watched, according to Antwi-Darkwa, who also noted that the spilling might continue until the inflows decreased to a manageable level.

In a related news, Abraham Amaliba expressed surprise that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has not yet offered an apology for his remarks at Mepe.

He claimed that the President insulted the Volta Region’s residents when he paid a visit to express his sympathies for the Akosombo Dam spillage victims.

Amaliba said he anticipates the President will have apologized by this point while speaking on TV3 in Accra.

Amaliba added that although the president has called his actions by a variety of names in his comments, he believes that everything is the result of his poor upbringing.

The president has only revealed his true character since taking the oath of office, he continued.

The spillages from the dams have had a significant impact on a large number of communities in the North Tongu, South Tongu, Asuogyaman, Ada East, Keta, and other coastal communities in the Volta Region.
