The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Functional Executive Committee (FEC) has reported to a Special Committee the violence that took place at its Greater Accra Regional Office during the vetting of candidates for the party’s Odododiodio Constituency parliamentary primary.

On Friday, October 13, a group of people stormed the location, causing property damage and assaulting a journalist as they were screening potential parliamentary candidates for the Odododiodio constituency.

Three NDC parliamentary candidates for the Odododiodio constituency appeared before the Greater Accra NDC vetting committee, and that’s when it all started.

Emmanuel Nii Okai Laryea, Michael Nii Yarboi Annan, and Alfred Kotey Ashie are the three. Members of one candidate’s camp attacked the vetting committee with rocks and destroyed party property, including chairs and an air conditioner, alleging unfairness on their part.

The violence that occurred at the NDC’s regional office in Odododiodio, South Louisiana was strongly condemned by the NDC party.

The Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the NDC, Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore, wrote a letter to the general public and those who were inconvenienced by the raid, extending a formal apology and assuring that those responsible would be held accountable.

Relatedly, the NDC leadership condemned the assault on Citi FM journalist Akosua Otchere on Friday, October 13, 2023, by a group of people who stormed the grounds of the vetting ground at Odododiodio, causing mayhem and assaulting a journalist in the process.

In a statement signed by Sammy Gyamfi, the national chairman of the party, the party apologizes to Akosua Otchere of CITI TV and all those impacted by the regrettable incident, expressing regret for any inconvenience caused.

Meanwhile, the current MP, Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, has formally declared his exit from the race.

The election has been scheduled for October 31, 2023 as a result of this unexpected development, and three candidates have already filed their nominations to run for the parliamentary position.

These prospective candidates will go through a thorough vetting procedure on a specific date before the choice is made.
