In the wake of the Akosombo Dam spillage, which has wreaked havoc on the residents of the Volta Region, parts of the Eastern, and the Greater Accra regions, former president John Dramani Mahama has denied making ethnocentric remarks against the people of the Ashanti Region.

According to a piece by dialysightonline.com that has been making the rounds on social media, Mahama claimed that President Nana Akufo-Addo would have responded to the flooding brought on by the spillage if it had happened in the Ashanti Region.

“Akufo-Addo does not want to come to Volta Region to inspect the havoc of the spillage. If it was Ashanti Region he would have rushed there. Are Ewes not human beings too? Are Asantes more human beings than Ewes?” the quotes that were attributed to the leader of the National Democratic Congress read.

In response to the allegations, however, Mr. John Mahama claimed that the administration was orchestrating “disinformation” against him.

He stated this on October 17, 2023, in a post on X, “This is false and they know it! Kindly ignore such acts of disinformation from the Office of the President of Ghana,”

He continued by pleading with the populace to disregard the “false” claims being made about him.

This development follows criticisms directed at President Akufo-Addo for remarks he made on Monday, October 16, at Mepe, one of the towns in the Volta Region most severely affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage.

He said in his speech to the chiefs and residents of the region that even though they had not voted for his party, he was still present because he was the country’s president.

After this, President Nana Akufo-Addo has received harsh criticism from Ghanaians for his remarks regarding the spill at the Akosombo Dam.

Obviously, majority of Ghanaians didn’t like this. They charged him with being a president who was tribalistic and unconcerned with the welfare of his people.
