A presidential flagbearer hopeful for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, has voiced his concern about the NPP’s performance in the 2020 elections.

He asserted that although the NPP government had kept its promises, its accomplishments had not been recognized by the electorate.

He claimed that the NPP had to face reality after nearly losing the election to the opposition.

He claimed that the Fourth Republic had never seen a hung parliament with 137 seats on each side as it exists today.

On Starr FM, speaking said Dr. Afriyie Akoto: “We did very well in our first term under President Akufo-Addo, but the people of Ghana did not reward us with a clear mandate. They were ready to kick us out. Why is that? What did we do wrong?”

He continued by saying that the NPP’s presidential victory margin, which was over one million votes in 2016 for former President John Mahama, was cut in half in 2020.

He claimed that the party’s internal flaws were to blame for its poor performance. He stated: “The party is our main instrument for campaigning, but the party is not healthy. The party is not in a coma, but it is not well either. The party is on a sick bed. I think my diagnosis was correct, and that’s why we nearly lost the election.”

Meanwhile, the incumbent MP, Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, has formally withdrew from the race, so the National Democratic Congress (NDC) must choose a new parliamentary candidate for the Odododiodio constituency.

The election has been scheduled for October 31, 2023 as a result of this unexpected development, and three candidates have already filed their nominations to run for the parliamentary position.

Since 2013, Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, who serves as the district’s Member of Parliament, has been a prominent figure in the political landscape of Odododiodio.
