Jones was a highly sought-after recruit coming out of high school. He chose to play college basketball for the Texas Longhorns. Jones also had a solid freshman season at Texas, averaging 8.2 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. He was named to the Pac-12 All-Freshman Team.
Jones improved significantly in his sophomore season at Texas. He averaged 11.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game. He was named to the Pac-12 All-Second Team and the USBWA All-District 9 Team.
