At Ejura in the Ashanti Region, armed robbers opened fire on a police officer and his fellow officers, tragically taking his life.

This terrifying incident took place on Monday, October 9, 2023, according to an official press release from the Ghana Police Service.

The gunmen got into a shootout with the police as they tried to foil their criminal plans to rob a mobile money vendor in Ejura, according to reports.

According to the press release, two officers were shot and quickly taken to the hospital. Upon arrival, one of the officers was identified as dead.

“The police, on 9 October 2023, arrested two suspects for preparation to commit robbery and opening fire on police officers at Ejura in the Ashanti Region,” the statement said.

“The identified suspects, Alhaji Wahab Suleiman and Ibrahim Abubakari, along with another accomplice who is currently on the run, engaged in a shootout with officers who were on a mission to prevent a planned robbery attack on a mobile money vendor in Ejura.

“During this confrontation, two officers suffered gunshot wounds and were immediately taken to the hospital for medical attention. Regrettably, one of the officers, identified as Nº 42250 General Sergeant Ahmed Kamal, lost his life,” the statement added.

The accomplice is being sought while the two robbers, who also suffered gunshot wounds, have been captured.

“The police have retrieved several items at the scene, including two SB shotguns, one pump-action gun, six live BB cartridges, and one used BB cartridge,” the release added.

In other news, former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Mr. Daniel Bugri Naabu, claimed that the Committee’s closed-door hearing into an alleged tape plotting the ouster of Inspector General of Police (IGP) George Akuffo-Dampare confirmed his claim that the audio recording was not altered.

Superintendents Eric Gyebi and George Asare, who are both witnesses in the ongoing investigation, allegedly acknowledged their voices and the specifics of the conversation on the new tape that was played during the in-camera hearing, according to him.
