Kennedy Agyapong, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) spokeswoman, has responded to Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, the party’s chairman for the Ashanti region, regarding his press conference on Wednesday, October 4, which was held in Kumasi.

The NPP’s Chairman for the Ashanti Region, known as Chairman Wontumi, threatened to have Ken Agyapong arrested if he didn’t stop threatening him and other party members.

Kennedy Agyapong’s spokesperson, William Kusi, responded vehemently, saying Chairman Wontumi should be detained if anyone deserves it.

“Since the establishment of NPP, there has not been an instance when a party chairman has slapped an MP. It is Chairman Wontumi. He slapped our brother Collins [Owusu Amankwa] but he is walking the streets of Kumasi and has not been arrested. If he says he will arrest somebody, he should go ahead and let’s see.”

The regional chairman’s mention of the late journalist Ahmed Hussein-Suale also infuriated Mr. Kusi.

He stated that because he is the head of the Police Council, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is the ultimate authority when it comes to criminal investigations.

“So if [Chairman Wontumi] wants the killers of Ahmed Suale, he should go the Vice President and ask him. He shouldn’t ever say our candidate has talked about Ahmed Suale, so he killed him. It should be the last time he will make that statement.”

According to reports, Chairman Wontumi’s order to constituency chairmen in the Region to have Alan Kyerematen’s posters and memorabilia removed from offices as a result of his resignation from the NPP sparked the argument between these two party members.

Chairman Wontumi was reprimanded by Mr. Alan Kyerematen for the order, and he revealed that it was he who had introduced him to mainstream NPP politics.

However, the regional chairman made it clear that the late Dr. Amoako Tuffuor, not the former Minister of Trade and Industry, was the one who welcomed him into the NPP.

On Saturday, November 4, the party is expected to choose its 2024 standard bearer. Ken Agyapong and Vice President Bawumia, for whom Chairman Wontumi has publicly expressed support, are rumored to be engaged in a quiet struggle.
