Today, a demonstration will be organized by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Minority Caucus in Parliament to call for the resignation of Dr. Ernest Addison, governor of the Bank of Ghana, and his two deputy governors.
In spite of police orders, the protest leaders insist they will march to the Central Bank’s premises to deliver their petition to the governor’s representatives.
The move comes after the Central Bank reported a loss of GH60.81 billion for the 2022 fiscal year and spent more than $250 million building a new headquarters at North Ridge.
According to the police, the protesters will assemble at Obra Spot to start the march, which will end at Independence Square.
Sammy Gyamfi, the NDC’s national communications officer, stated in a Citi News interview that the protest’s organizers would continue to the Central Bank to present their petition.
“Our leaders led by Cassiel Ato Forson and the leaders of the other groups will go to the frontage of the Central Bank, meet representatives of the governor, and present our petition and nobody ever said we were going to enter the Bank of Ghana with all the protesters and demonstrators,” Gyamfi said.
Relatedly, rotesters gather at Obra Spot for #OccupyBoG Demo organized by the NDC minority group in Parliament, Arise Ghana, and others.
Alleging mismanagement and careless spending, including the building of the new head office, they demand the resignation of the governor of the Bank of Ghana.
Protesters include prominent lawmakers Francis-Xavier Sosu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and Bede Ziedeng.
Meanwhile, as a result of a disagreement over the protest’s route between the Ghana Police Service and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Minority, tensions are rising ahead of this morning’s planned #OccupyBoG demonstration.
A predetermined route for the #OccupyBoG protest had been announced in advance by the Ghana Police Service, allowing protestors to march from Obra Spot at Kwame Nkrumah Circle to Independence Square.
