According to reports, E.T Mensah, a former council member and member of parliament, has died at the age of 77.
He had been ailing for some time and, according to reports, passed away in South Africa.
Mr. Mensah was well-known in Ghanaian politics and held the positions of Minister of Education and Member of Parliament for the Ningo-Prampram constituency for more than 20 years.
He was survived by his wife and seven children and was affectionately known as ET Mensah. This information was released not long after Theresa Kufuor, the former first lady, passed away on October 1, 2023.
He served as the long-time Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), which is equivalent to being the Mayor of the City of Accra, during the PNDC military regime in Ghana. When the National Democratic Congress was established in 1992, he joined it.
In addition, he ran for office in the 1996 parliamentary election and won the Ningo-Prampram constituency, serving as MP for nearly ten years.
He retained his position in parliament even after the NDC suffered defeat in the 2000 elections. Sam George defeated Mensah in the NDC primary on November 21, 2015.
Prior to the 2008 parliamentary elections in Ghana, he previously held the position of Minority Chief Whip in the House. He was appointed Majority Chief Whip in Parliament in January 2009.
He was chosen by President Jerry John Rawlings to serve as Minister for Youth and Sports at the start of the Fourth Republic. Mensah served in that capacity for the entirety of the two Rawlings administration terms. President John Atta Mills appointed him Minister for Employment and Social Welfare in January 2010 following a cabinet shuffle.
E.T Mensah served in the Pan-African Parliament from January 2008 until his resignation in January 2009, when he was named a member of state.
After Betty Mould-Iddrisu resigned as minister of education in January 2011, he was named to the position.
E.T Mensah was unanimously chosen to serve as the Council of State’s representative for the Greater Accra Region on February 12, 2021.
