Jamaal Bowman is an American politician who has served as the U.S. Representative for New York’s 16th congressional district since 2021. He is a member of the Democratic Party.
Bowman was born in New York City on April 11, 1977. He grew up in the Eastchester Gardens public housing complex in the Bronx. Bowman’s father, James, was a bus driver, and his mother, Velma, was a teacher’s aide.
Bowman attended public schools in New York City, and he graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School in 1995. He then went on to attend the University of Bridgeport, where he graduated with a degree in English in 1999.
After college, Bowman worked as a middle school teacher in the New York City public school system. He also served as a mentor to at-risk youth.
In 2018, Bowman ran for the U.S. House of Representatives in New York’s 16th congressional district. He defeated incumbent Eliot Engel in the Democratic primary, and he went on to win the general election.
Bowman is the first Black person to represent New York’s 16th congressional district. He is also one of the youngest members of the U.S. House of Representatives.
