George Afriyie, a candidate for the presidency of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has taken legal action by submitting an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

George Afriyie has been successful in stopping the GFA presidential elections, which were initially planned for October 12, 2023.

Due to a court-ordered adjournment associated with a dispute between King Faisal Football Club and the football governing body, the Ghana Football Association congress, which was initially scheduled for October 5, 2023, has been postponed.

This action was taken after the GFA Elections Appeals Committee recently upheld Afriyie’s disqualification from voting.

George Afriyie and Kurt Okraku, the current GFA President, were initially expected to compete for the presidency; however, after Afriyie’s disqualification was upheld, Okraku was almost certain to run unopposed.

The election has been clouded by this sequence of incidents, making it difficult to determine the best course of action.

Afriyie has contested every single GFA elections since 2005, but got disqualified.

If Afriyie’s appeal is rejected, Okraku, the current GFA president, will run unopposed for reelection.

Relatively, Kurt Okraku, the president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has declared his intention to run for re-election in the upcoming GFA elections, which are set for October.

In response to his declaration, Okraku received a standing ovation and chants of “Long Live Kurt” from the audience at the 29th GFA Ordinary Congress.

Okraku’s affirmation opens the door for a tight race because former vice presidents of the Ghana Football Association George Afriyie and Kojo Yankah have also declared their intention to run.
