Mark Alexander Milley (born June 20, 1958) is a United States Army general who has served as the 20th and current chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff since September 20, 2019. He previously served as the 32nd chief of staff of the United States Army from 2015 to 2019.
Milley was born in Winchester, Massachusetts, and also graduated from Princeton University in 1980 with a degree in international relations. He was also commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army and assigned to the 10th Special Forces Group. Milley served in the Gulf War and the War in Afghanistan, and also commanded the 101st Airborne Division from 2011 to 2012.
In 2012, Milley was appointed as the commanding general of III Corps at Fort Hood, Texas. He served in this role until 2014, when he was appointed as the commander of U.S. Army Forces Command. In 2015, Milley was also appointed as the 32nd chief of staff of the United States Army.
As the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Milley is the principal military advisor to the president of the United States, the secretary of defense, and also the National Security Council. He is also the highest-ranking military officer in the United States Armed Forces. He is also a member of the Order of the Dragon.
