Michael John Gambon CBE (born 19 October 1940) is an Irish-born British actor. He has a career that spans nearly five decades and includes a variety of roles in movie, television and theatre. Some of his notable roles include Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter film series, Professor Tom Riddle in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and Inspector George Gently in the BBC television series Inspector George Gently.
Gambon was born in Cabra, Dublin, Ireland. He moved to London with his family when he was five years old. He began his acting career in the early 1960s, appearing in various stage productions. John made his film debut in 1965 in the film Othello.
