The Western Regional Police Command detained three young men in Diabene, Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis, and is now prosecuting them for conspiring with the Wagner mercenary group in Russia and attempting to establish an outpost there.
Evans, 25, Michael Asiedu, 23, and Ernest Asiedu, 26, have been named as the suspects. At a public durbar they organized, they were seen wearing and waving the Russian and Wagnerian flags.
In the Diabene community park, the three men allegedly recruited about 20 youths to form a military unit with the help of a fictitious Australian sponsor.
Police were able to apprehend them, however, thanks to a tip, before they could carry out their plan.
Ramatu Ibrahim, an assemblywoman from Fijai who oversees Diabene, is reported to have confirmed the developments and stated that the suspects must be subjected to the full force of the law in order to act as a deterrent.
“The police said after arrest and interrogation, the boys said they were doing a freedom demonstration, they said they were training on how to wage war against the government, so I asked how? They were hoisting different flags of different countries, and playing the national anthem.
“Their influential leader is abroad, and the leader in Ghana is 25 years old, after the police explained things to them, they realised that they didn’t know what they were in for. I learnt they were promised some money if their planned action becomes successful,” Citinewsroom.com quotes her as saying.
According to reports, Mensah Promise, the spinner who was also arrested alongside the suspects while providing music for their durbar, claimed that he and his co-accused had already appeared in court twice at the Takoradi Circuit Court but were released on bail at the time.
Despite having already confirmed it, the Western Regional Police Command is expected to provide more details.
