The National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) flagbearer and former President John Dramani Mahama has urged the National Identification Authority (NIA) to speed up its work to get more Ghanaians register on the Ghana card.
Mahama made this comments after visiting some registration centers across Greater Accra during the current ongoing limited voter registration exercise.
Earlier on we reported that the former president will tour Accra to monitor the country’s current limited voter registration.
Before visiting the district offices in Adenta, La, and Tema, he first stopped by the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) headquarters.
The limited voter registration period started on September 12 and was supposed to end on October 2 (Monday).
Mr. John Mahama took to his X page (formerly Twitter) to express his dissatisfaction with the ongoing limited voters registration.
According to him, after visiting some centers in Accra, he noticed that a lot of young people were waiting in queues to get registered.
He added that he also observed that most of them were registered through the guarantor system.
Mahama then charged the NIA to fast track the registration of Ghanaians who don’t have the Ghana card so that such people won’t be denied from getting a voter’s ID card.
On Friday, I visited some registration centres in the Greater Accra Region, where I noticed that hundreds of young people were waiting in queues to be registered. It was clear that a significant number were registered through the guarantor system.

In connection with this, the NDC has requested that ECOWAS summon Jean Mensah, the electoral commissioner, to order.
Speaking to reporters, Johnson Aseidu Nketia, the National Chairman of the NDC, urged the regional alliance to take the initiative to protect Ghana’s democracy.
The NDC Chairman also claims that numerous irregularities, particularly in the party’s strongholds, have plagued the ongoing limited voter registration exercise since it began on September 12, 2023.
“This irresponsible and unconscionable decision of the commission confirms the NDC’s long-held view that the Jean Mensah-led EC is determined to rig the 2024 elections through voter suppression. But she will fail because we are ready for them.
At its district offices across the nation, the Electoral Commission is currently conducting the ongoing limited voter registration exercise.
