Fernando Botero was born on April 19, 1932, in Medellín, Colombia. He was also the eldest of three children born to David Botero, a cattle rancher, and Flora Angulo.
Botero showed an early aptitude for art as well as began drawing at a young age. He also attended the School of Fine Arts in Medellín, where he studied painting and sculpture.
Botero has been married twice. His first wife was Gloria Zea, a Colombian journalist. They were also married from 1956 to 1960 and had one daughter, Lina.
Botero’s second wife is Sophía Várela, a Colombian painter. They were also married in 1964 and have three children, Fernando, Juan Carlos, and Pedro.
