Kwame Baffoe, also known as Abronye DC, has asked Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to give Ghanaians an explanation for why he is alleged to have ordered the interdiction of police officers who are testifying before a parliamentary ad hoc committee looking into their scheme to remove the IGP.

The vice president, who according to Article 201 of the Constitution is the chairman of the police council, must have presided over the decision to interdict the accused officers even before the Atta-Akyea-led committee could complete its work, according to Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“When you look at Articles 200 and 201 of our constitution, it states that the Vice President is the Chairman of the Police Council. This means that he sat in and ordered the interdiction of Alex Mensah.

“I’m only interested in this but I know people are going to say I am controversial but I don’t care,” Abronye DC said in Twi in an interview on Oman FM on Tuesday, September 12, 2023.

In a leaked audio recording, three police officers—Superintendent George L. Asare, COP George Alex Mensah, and Superintendent Emmanuel Gyabi—are heard discussing plans to assassinate Inspector-General of Police Dr. George Akuffo Dampare and enlist the aid of former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party Bugri Naabu.

The latter secretly recorded the conversation and leaked it, sparking a public outcry that led to the issue being referred to an ad hoc committee by parliament for an investigation.

The police administration announced the implicated officers’ interdiction in a statement on September 8, 2023, while they were still testifying before the committee.

Analysts criticized the development, claiming it was unfair to the parliamentary committee’s work. The interdiction was then suspended the following day, on Friday, September 9, 2023, in another statement.
