The shocking and unexpected death of their goalkeeper Sylvester Sackey at the age of 26 has left Legon Cities in shock.
Sylvester’s death, which was reportedly brought on by a brief illness, shocked the football world.
The club expressed their deep sorrow in an official statement, saying, “With heavy hearts, we regret to inform you of the untimely passing of our goalkeeper, Sylvester Sackey.”
The group also acknowledged Sylvester’s important contributions, saying, “Sackey has been an integral part of our team for the past four seasons, holding the position of first-choice goalkeeper for a significant portion of the last two seasons.”
Everyone connected to Legon Cities FC has been greatly affected by the loss of Sackey.
The club expressed its sincere condolences to his bereaved family and added, “His demise is a big blow to everyone associated with the club. Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved family during this very difficult time.”
The club added that they are in touch with Sylvester’s family and will let them know what they will do next in the coming days.
In the light of this, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has send a heartfelt condelence message to the Legon Citis and the family of departed Sylvester Sackey.
In a tweet, the GFA said, “Last night, the football fraternity was deeply saddened by the news of Sylvester Sackey‘s passing. The Ghana Football Association sends our heartfelt condolences to @LegonCitiesFC and his family. Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time.”
Meanwhile, Ghanaians have reacted massively by sharing their tributes on Twitter (X) following the sad news of the passing of the goalkeeper.
In their Tuesday international friendly at the Accra Sports Stadium, Ghana easily defeated Liberia 3-1.
Chris Hughton’s team romped to victory thanks to goals from Ernest Nuamah, Mohammed Kudus, and Jordan Ayew in the second half. Liberia’s consolation goal was scored by Divine Teah.
