The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer candidate Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has declared that he will run in the primaries in November.

The Member of Parliament for Assin Central has stated that he will not withdraw from the race in favor of another contender.

Kennedy Agyapong is quoted by Ghanaweb as saying that the way the flagbearer primaries are conducted will determine the NPP’s level of cohesion leading up to the general elections in 2024.

“I am not going to step down for anybody, when you win, then you win, so all of us, if we have to come together, then we come together. But coming together will depend on how we will conduct this November 4th election because how they treated all of us on the 26th, I think it is not proper.”

Kennedy and three other candidates—Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, and Addai-Nimoh—will compete for the position of flagbearer.

The NPP has set November 4, 2023, as the date to choose a new party leader to succeed President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Kennedy Agyapong’s campaign team earlier denied rumors that he would withdraw from the race.

In a statement released on September 7th, the group claimed: “Our attention has been drawn to a rumor making the rounds, particularly on social media that Honourable Ken Ohene Agyapong will soon be announcing his withdrawal from the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP’s) Presidential primaries scheduled for November 4 this year.

“The rumor comes in the wake of the withdrawal of Honorable John Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen from the race on Monday.

“We wish to state unequivocally that Honourable Ken Ohene Agyapong is committed to staying in the race, and at no point has he contemplated withdrawing from the contest.

With a total of 629 votes, or 68.15% of the vote, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia won the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Special Delegates’ Conference.

Former trade minister Alan Kyerematen finished third with 95 votes, or 10.29%, followed by Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong in second place with 132 votes, or 14.30%.
