The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare appeared before the 7-member ad-hoc committee chaired by Samuel Atta Akyea on Tuesday, September 12, accompanied by his lawyers.
IGP Dampare has denied having a hand in the recording of the leaked tape as alleged by COP Alex Mensah.
A senior police officer named George Alex Mensah claimed that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) was behind the recording and distribution of a private conversation he [COP Mensah] had with former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Northern Regional Chairman, Daniel Bugri Naabu. This is in reference to the alleged plot to have the IGP removed.
Secret conversations between Mr. Naabu, Superintendent George Asare, COP Mensah, and another senior police officer were captured on the tape that was leaked.
Discussions on the tape included predictions for the NPP’s victory in the elections of 2024.
“I did not play any role in the recording of the leaked tape,” IGP Dampare told the Parliamentary Committee on Tuesday, September 12.
Speaking to the Parliamentary Committee, IGP Damapre said the wild accusations brought up against him by COP Alex Mensah and Superintendent George Asare broke him, his wife, kids and the entire Ghana Police Service down.
“My accusers made wild allegations that touched my person without a shred of evidence. Those accusations have brought a lot of pain to myself and my family,” he said.
“I have no choice but to appear before the committee because of the respect I have for myself, my wife and kids, my brothers and sisters sitting behind me, who have pulled themselves together and the institution I represent,” he added.
In a related news, Kwame Gyan, the lawyer of the IGP Dampare has objected to presence of other witnesses during his turn to be interrogated by the Parliamentary Committee probing into the leaked tape.
