The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has claimed that his record as the head of the Ghana Police Service is spotless.
He asserted that COP George Alex Mensah’s claim that he is the worst IGP in Ghana’s history is unfounded. Mensah is the Director-General of Operations for the Ghana Police Service.
Speaking before the Parliamentary Committee looking into a tape that was leaked about his administration, he claimed that COP Mensah actually meant to call him the greatest IGP Ghana has ever seen.
“I think my colleague meant to say I’m the best IGP in Ghana’s history. I think it was a slip of tongue on his part,” he said.
COP Alex Mensah testified that he has repeatedly told the IGP face-to-face that he is the worst while testifying before the Committee charged with investigating an alleged plot to remove the IGP on September 1.
With him in charge of the police administration, he claimed, the Service is going in the wrong direction.
“Honourable member and honourable chair, several opportunities and what I said yesterday if you give me the opportunity today, I will say it again. For me, for the 31 years I have been in the service, he is the worst IGP ever,” he said.
On August 31st, COP Alex Mensah admitted several things in front of the Committee.
“Honourable Chair, I will not deny that fact today, tomorrow or the next day, I will make that statement again, that the current Inspector General of Police is not managing the Police Service well.”
Former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Bugri Naabu has played a major role in the scandal involving the exposed tapes.
He and other senior police officers are allegedly heard discussing a plot to depose the IGP in order to assist the NPP in rigging the 2024 elections in the audio recordings that have leaked.
