Elorm Ababio, better known on YouTube as Ama Governor, a Ghanaian, will be permitted by the General Legal Council to apply to be admitted to the Ghana Bar in October or November of 2023.

Following a complaint the Council received regarding alleged misconduct on the part of Ama Governor, this was the conclusion of months of investigations.

Ama Governor had been charged with misconduct after it was claimed that she was caught on widely watched videos acting in a way that was inappropriate for a person waiting to be admitted to the bar.

The Council claimed that a committee had been established to look into the complaint and submit a report. After concluding its inquiries, the Committee reported to Council.

“After consideration of the report, Council decided to permit the student to complete appropriate forms for application to be called to Bar in October/November 2023.

However, Ama Governor will be monitored by Council and her conduct observed during the time leading up to the submission of the application to be called to the Bar.

The statement also adds that “Council further decided that should the application to be called to the Bar be successful, the student will be required to give special undertaking to be of good behaviour and not to repeat any conduct which may bring the profession into disrepute whilst enrolled on the roll of Lawyers in Ghana. A letter was therefore written to the student to convey the decisions of Council.”

Ama Governor’s goal of becoming a lawyer was put on hold in November 2022 when she was not granted a call to the Ghana Bar.

This was in spite of the fact that she completed the professional law program successfully, passing all of the required exams and performing well in the interview.

She was expected to be called, but the General Legal Council’s Secretary informed her of the decision in a letter instead.

It was claimed that the situation was being looked into.

In the meantime, Ama Governor’s call to the Ghana Bar was suspended by the General Legal Council in August 2023. This decision was defended by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
