The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has been invited to appear before the 7-member ad-hoc committee chaired by Samuel Atta Akyea on Tuesday, September 12, accompanied by his lawyers.
On the topics covered in the leaked tape, the Inspector General of Police is anticipated to have a chance to speak. In an interview with JoyNews, Hon. Atta Akyea said it was crucial that the IGP be heard.
Lawyer Atta Akyea, the chairman of the committee looking into the IGP tape that was leaked, said the committee’s work was essential to learning more about the topics covered in the tape.
He claims that the new take is over an hour long and that the committee has a longer version of the tape. He revealed this on JoyNews’ The Probe.
He continued by saying that everyone who had appeared before the committee would be required to show up on the same day, accompanied by their attorneys.
Nothing could be more honorable, he continued, for the IGP Dampare to confront his accusers in a public hearing. However, he added that a portion of the hearing might take place behind closed doors if the committee feels that releasing certain information could compromise national security and be too sensitive for the general public.
“I do not think the IGP will turn down the invite to appear before the Committee” – Lawyer Atta Akyea
The IGP Dampare is not being tried, so there is no motivation to cast doubt on him, he continued. He further stated that the Committee’s work upholds the Principles of Natural Justice.
Attorney Atta Akyea quickly added that the Committee would look into additional matters raised in the tape that was made available to the committee.
